Last week Sunday Walmart made its first appearance in Retail Advertising in South Africa. Although the deals were nothing spectacular (except maybe for the 14W Osram power saver lamps selling for a killer price) it did create a first in South Africa. A retailer advertising Great Deals valid for months – yip thats right. Not the usual get it while you can for the 3 days we have it on special and I am sure other Retailer will follow very soon with the same type of strategy.
The other nice thing for us as consumers is that if a retailer has deals valid for this long, other retailers will try and beat it over the same period and we should be getting Extra Special Deals coming through and I cannot wait.
I am a avid Pick n Pay shopper (for my own reasons that I will maybe tell you all about in the future), but must admit that it look like pricing wise, all retailers are busting there buts off to get the best deals and it is visible in the weekly advertising you see. Its great for us as consumers, but we still dont want to drive from 1 retailer to the other to only buy the best deals. That is were the so call “shopping basket” comes in. It will differ from person to person (depending on buying habits), but we all want to go to one place and get the best deal on the basket.
I am planning on getting a basket together and will then try to track pricing on this basket in the months to come. There is probably some data out there (if you know where let me know) so I will post as soon as I know. The idea behind it will be to guide people to the Cheapest Retailer by Basket of products. If you have any ideas let me know as I am open to suggestions.
